Scrapie Identification Program

4-H and FFA members showing in lamb and goat projects, the Scrapie identification program affects you and the lambs or goats you show!

What is Scrapie?

Scrapie is a fatal, degenerative disease affecting the central nervous system of sheep and goats.  There is no cure and there is no treatment.  Go to the web page for more details.  http://www.animalagriculture.org/scrapie/Scrapie.htm

What you need to know.

If you buy a show lamb or goat, regardless of age or gender, be sure it has an official USDA Scrapie identification tag in its ear when you buy it!   If there is not a Scrapie ID tag in the ear, insist that the producer get one.

If you raise your lamb or goat, be sure to get Scrapie id tags from USDA.  Call 1-866-USDA-TAG and register for the Scrapie Eradication program.  USDA supplies the tags and one applicator for free.
